Another thing to check out during your short stay in Manila is Intramuros. Trust me, it’s like stepping into a time machine—if that time machine was a little rusty and had a penchant for Spanish architecture. There’s so much history here, from the 300+ years of Spanish occupation to the Japanese and American occupations.
The walled city encompasses:
Fort Santiago: Where you can ponder life’s big questions, like “Why did I wear these shoes for walking?”
Plaza Roma: Great for people-watching
Puerta del Parian Gate: It’s basically the red carpet of Intramuros, minus the paparazzi.
Manila Cathedral: Perfect for when you need a moment of silence after all that history.
San Agustin Church: A UNESCO World Heritage site.
You can explore on your own or go with a guided tour—I opted to do it via bamboo bikes. Yes, bamboo bikes! Because why not add a little “survival of the fittest” to your sightseeing experience? It’s a much different experience than a walking tour, for sure. First stop: San Agustin Church, where I planned to pray for my legs after all that pedaling!
Then off to Fort Santiago
Then to Puerta del Parian gate and garden.
Manila Cathedral
Adruana Building and Plaza Roma
Next off to the beaches-getting away from the congestion and traffic for a few weeks. I must admit, I won't miss this city. I have honestly never seen or experienced traffic like this before!
